Kimberley Hospital Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and Burns

Kimberley Hospital Complex is the only facility within the Northern Cape Province to offer this specialized service.

The Department/Unit of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and Burns started at Kimberley Hospital Complex in June 2005. The medical team consists of one full-time consultant and Head of Unit (Dr. Maria G.Giaquinto-Cilliers), one Medical Officer (Dr. Thabo Mathe) and two rotating Community Service Doctors.  An average of 40-50 patients are seen as outpatients weekly ( referrals from other clinics and hospitals within the province and referrals by other departments) for assessment by the plastic surgery team.

Acute burn patients are admitted in the Burn Unit (Ward K2), which offers 24 beds (8 male, 8 female and 8  paediatric beds). Two High Care beds accommodate the critically-ill burned patients. A multidisciplinary team cares for the burn patients, aiming towards the acute management and rehabilitation of these patients. This multidisciplinary team includes doctors, nursing staff, pharmacists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, dieticians, social workers, psychologists and an infection control officer.
